Marketing is Everything

Lopez Island, WA, United States

There is no time like the present

Marketing is Everything!
The pandemic is not the time to ease up on your marketing efforts. Now is the perfect time to ramp up your marketing and to start by revisiting your why. Why did you go into business in the first place? What makes you want to come into the office every day (even if that "office" is in your living room)? Now is the time to reflect on how you can make your customers' experience better, how you can impact your community, and how to increase your customers and staff's retention.

Deepen Your Connection
Marketing during the current economic climate with the world turned upside down is an excellent opportunity to connect with your clients on a deeper level. It's prime time to work on your relationship with the people driving your business. What can YOU do to make their life easier? Remind them that you are here for them during these challenging times. Focus your marketing efforts on your current clients rather than spend money trying to bring in new ones. It costs less and has a similar impact on your bottom line. It also leads to great reviews and positive word-of-mouth on the streets.

Consider what platforms to use: Email, social media, blogs, texts, phone calls, newsletter, etc. Then decide WHAT you want to convey. One possible example: The protective measures you and your staff are taking to keep everyone safe or How you are making it easy for your customers to do business with you right now.

Start where you are and utilize what you already have in place whether it's a meeting with the person who handles your marketing in-house or your marketing agency. Take the time to ensure that your marketing is targeted and utilize the platforms available to you. Write that monthly blog to help Google know you're active.

Everything You Do is Marketing
Remember that everything you do is marketing. The friendly wave you give on the street to the activities you do to support your community is all a reflection of your business. The same goes for every one of your employees. Work with your staff to answer the phones and greet customers, and remind them that they represent your business even when they aren't at work. At this time in particular, because everyone feels the additional pressures, everything you do will plant the seeds of your future business.

Call Your Customers
Another way to stand out is to call your customers. From missed appointments to just calling to check in on them to see how they're doing in these unprecedented times. Showing them that they are not only a number but a human being that your business cares about goes a long way in building trust and strengthening customer/client retention. Some other potential reasons to call:
  • Upcoming appointments and/or maintenance
  • Follow up on work suggested in the past
  • Follow up on a bad review or a response to a text
Start by asking them how they are doing during this challenging time and go from there. Let your client or customer know all the ways you are helping them to stay safe. Be genuine, kind, and transparent.

Be A Leader
Let them know how you are there for them. Take time to do a FB live. People want to see your face and hear your voice. Videos are a fantastic way to connect with your customers, especially in a time of crisis. Keep it simple. Be authentic.

Other Marketing Ideas
Share useful information that you come across about your area to help in light of the current situation.
Humor. Don't make everything so serious. Animals are one way to lighten up your social media feed.
Encourage people to remain kind and thoughtful and to connect with gratitude.
Don't ignore your reviews, even the negative ones.
If you send out follow up emails or text messages, make sure to respond if they have reached out.
Consider changing your ad-words to include COVID-19, Coronavirus, pandemic, as a way of getting it out there that you are, indeed, open during this time.
